Reduce. Reuse. Rethink.

These words are more than just a slogan for Vivikta Gupta. They are the foundation of a student-;ed social venture designed to transform how young children understand and manage waste. Vivikta’s initiative, the Zero Waste Challenge is a school-based program that embeds sustainable habits in primary school students, turning classrooms into living laboratories of environmental responsibility.

In primary schools across the city of Gurgaon (Haryana state) in India, large amounts of mixed waste (food scraps, plastic packaging and paper) are generated every day. With limited awareness and no structured waste management systems, this waste contributes to pollution, unhygienic school campuses and missed opportunities to build sustainable habits early in life. Vivikta recognized in this situation a simple but powerful truth – habits formed in childhood last a lifetime. If children learn to segregate waste, reduce plastic use and compost food scraps early on, they are more likely to carry these behaviors into adulthood. Her response resulted in raising awareness and redesigning school culture from the ground up.

Vivikta’s Zero Waste Challenge is a hands-on, action-oriented initiative aligned with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Rather than relying on lectures alone, her program integrates waste segregation demonstrations, composting activities, plastic-free lunch initiatives, reusable craft projects and sustainability exhibitions. Her model is designed to be embedded into regular school routines so that sustainability becomes practice, not performance.

What also sets Vivikta’s project apart is its structured, measurable design. The program provides simple but essential inputs including teacher support, colour-coded wet and dry waste bins, reusable items, posters and student volunteers. Short term outcomes from these outputs are anticipated to include children correctly identifying wet versus dry waste and reducing single-use plastics. Over time, this grows into long term sustainable and consistent segregation habits, and eco-friendly practices at home.

Her initiative is also designed for expansion and collaboration. It envisions partnerships between school administrations, environmental NGOs, CSR partners and local government bodies. Scaling for her means more than just reaching additional schools and increasing numbers. It means embedding zero-waste principles into school systems, training teachers and student leaders, and creating long term cultural change.

Vivikta Gupta’s Zero Waste Challenge demonstrates how local action can drive global impact through structured design, measurable goals, collaborative partnerships and a deeply human understanding of how children learn. By empowering young citizens to reduce, reuse and rethink, Vivikta is not just cleaning schools – she is shaping the environmental leaders of tomorrow.
